I have been in touch with James Walton at the Muskoka Community Network (MCN) and he has confirmed that although HiSpeed service is not available for the Go Home Lake area today, he has confirmed that MCN is working with their contractor, Core Broadband, to provide wireless HiSpeed to our area. The plan would have a tower on Go Home Lake near a public landing. Currently work in the area is scheduled to be completed this summer.
Although Core Broadband is building a wireless network across Muskoka, they do not sell directly to customers off of it. There are few different re-sellers on the network, including Vianet, Surenet and Indigiinet. You can get contact information for all of them here: re-sellers contact info..
To further justify the tower, they usually like to see demand for Broadband in the area, if you could fill out the Broadband Demand Survey at the link below, it would be appreciated. Broadband Demand Survey..
In the meantime, I believe some members are using satellite connections but understand latency is usually seen with this technology. For those of you using satellite, what has been your experience with performance? Who’s service are you using?
The alternative is to use my Blackberry/iPhone but due to the line of work I’m in, I need Internet connectivity on my PC too. I have recently subscribed to the Rogers Rocket Mobile Internet Stick service. The service provides access to Rogers’ 3.5G Network in our area and claim download speeds of up to 7.2M Mbps.
I tried the Rogers Mobile Internet Stick at my cottage on Wednesday, April 25th and the performance was great. I was able to connect to the Rogers 3.5G network with full bars. If anyone is interested in HiSpeed Internet Access, the Internet Stick appears to be a great option. For more information, check out Rogers rocketstick..
